Our World Environment and Development Agency works with women, youth, farmers,
and vulnerable communities across Liberia to promote inclusive
development, climate-smart agriculture, human rights protection,
peacebuilding, and sustainable livelihoods.
OWEDA has been operating in Liberia since 2012, advancing and advocating for the rights of community women and youth in the
pursuit of inclusive development at the local level. The organisation is among the leading Liberian not-for-profit, non- governmental
organisations promoting human rights protection, gender inclusion, sexual and reproductive health and rights, peacebuilding and
civic education, alongside community development through climate-smart agriculture, food security, livelihoods, and value chain
development.
Supporting community development and advocacy in Liberia since 2012.
Mobilizing funding to support development programs and community initiatives.
Led by an Executive Director, Management Team, and Board of Directors.
Covering agriculture, gender rights, livelihoods, WASH, civic education, peacebuilding, and more.
Mission: OWEDA seeks to touch lives and transform communities through equitable, sustainable, and gender-responsive agricultural and development interventions, ensuring safe, protective, and prosperous environments for all Liberians.
Vision: OWEDA strives for a resilient Liberia where communities thrive through inclusive development, gender equality, strong markets, climate-smart agriculture, and robust protection systems.
OWEDA’s vision is anchored in core thematic areas covering climate-smart agriculture, conservation and biodiversity, livelihoods and income generation, women’s rights and protection, peacebuilding, psychosocial counselling, civic education, and water, sanitation, and hygiene. Over more than a decade of community programming, OWEDA has demonstrated that sustainable development is only possible where women, youth, and children are equally protected, engaged in local governance, and participating meaningfully in economic life. The organisation operates with a country team of over 12 staff, supported by a Board of Directors and a Management Team led by the Executive Director, and maintains a QuickBooks-based financial management system that integrates finance, human resources, and budget functions, with comprehensive policies covering accounting, cost allocation, treasury management, internal controls, conflict of interest, transaction documentation, and sub-recipient financial monitoring.
OWEDA delivers community-centered programs that empower women, youth, and vulnerable communities through sustainable development, human rights advocacy, and climate-smart solutions. Our work strengthens livelihoods, promotes inclusive governance, and builds resilient communities across Liberia.
We support farmers with climate-smart agricultural practices that improve food security, strengthen sustainable farming systems, and increase productivity while protecting natural resources and building resilient communities.
OWEDA promotes responsible natural resource management and environmental conservation by encouraging sustainable practices that protect biodiversity while supporting community livelihoods.
We create economic opportunities by strengthening agricultural value chains, supporting smallholder farmers, and empowering women and youth with income-generating skills and sustainable livelihood initiatives.
We advocate for gender equality and the protection of women and girls through community engagement, GBV prevention, psychosocial support, leadership development, and human rights initiatives.
Our key targeted audiences are local farmers, youth, especially women and children, hard-to-reach communities, IDPs, refugees, community-based organizations, farmer-based organizations, and farmers’ cooperatives
OWEDA has extensive experience in delivering projects that foster positive social norms and community mobilization. OWEDA has been implementing several projects, including women’s economic empowerment, specialized GBV case management, psychosocial support services, and community activism. The organization uses community-based approaches in collaboration with local organizations.
This initiative has fostered coalitions addressing gender power imbalances. OWEDA has trained activists across communities in Montserrado, Lofa, and Nimba
Graduates from the Engaging Men in Accountable Practices (EMAP) curriculum were recruited from local groups and CSOs. The EMAP mechanism ensures community mobilization is women-led and accountable to diverse women and girls. OWEDA provided a Training of Trainers (TOT) for partners on the SASA! approach, and local partners disseminate GBV prevention information within communities.
Between 2012 and 2025, OWEDA raised over USD 510,000 in support of its activities in Liberia, with recent funders including CARI/AGRA, BRAC/WFP, UNDP, the National Election Commission, and the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE) under the Recovery of Economic Activity for Liberian Informal Sector Employment (REALISE) programme. OWEDA has also implemented self-funded initiatives to empower agricultural students and household members to generate income and produce vegetables, giving the organisation direct, hands-on experience of supporting the very kinds of TVET-linked agribusiness ventures the RETRAP Agro Incubator is designed to grow.
